Hip Replacement, or Hip Arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace all or part of the hip joint with a prosthetic implant in order to restore joint movement. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a Total Hip Replacement (THR) or a hemi (half) arthroplasty. A THR consists of replacing both the femoral head and the hip socket (acetabulum) with a prosthetic device where as if a hemi-arthroplasty is performed, either the femoral head or the hip socket will be replaced with a prosthetic device.
